In this comprehensive guide, we will reveal everything you need to know to turn your dream into a reality. From the legal requirements to expert tips and ideas, we've got you covered. So, let's get started on making your special day truly unforgettable!

  1. Hire an Officiant / Priest

To legally marry in Iceland, the first and foremost requirement is to have someone to officiate your wedding. You can even pick a priest from the Nordic Pagan or a Humanist.

2. Get your Marriage License

More fun paperwork ;) If you’re planning to legally get married in Canmore you will need to get your marriage license. You can do this by heading to a registry and acquiring the marriage license. It is good for up to 3 months from the date you received it. The marriage license costs $40. There are a few key documents you’ll need to bring to get the license;

  • You will need a Marriage Notification form (Hjónavígsluskýrsla in Icelandic) from the District of Magistrate in Reykjavík. Information for that can be found - HERE. You will also need 2 witnesses

  • Both of your birth certificates and attach to the Marriage Application Form. Only originals or officially authorized (stamp or seal) are accepted.

  • Certificate of Marital Status (to show that you are already not married). You will get this from your home state. This paperwork needs to be issued within 8 weeks prior to your wedding ceremony. If your country does not offer these, you will have to get a certificate issued by the relevant authorities of your country stating you are not married.

You will also need to show the paperwork if you are divorced or a widower to show you are no longer married to this person.

AFFIDAVIT OF SINGLE STATUS (DECLARATION OF NON-IMPEDIMENT)

It is not always a requirement to produce a Certificate of No Impediment when you are getting married abroad. Some countries will be happy with an Affidavit sworn before a notary public. This document may also be known as an Affidavit of Single Status or Declaration of Non-Impediment.

  • Valid Passports (and Visas if necessary) so you can show that you are legally within your rights to stay in Iceland and not violating any visas.

  • Proof of stay in Iceland (stamp in passport, visa, plane tickets, etc.)

3.Planning Your Perfect Iceland Elopement Date

When choosing a date for your Iceland elopement, consider the season you prefer. If you pick summer, keep in mind that it's a popular time for tourists. In that case, it's better to plan your elopement on a weekday. Make sure to inform your officiant and get your marriage license for your unforgettable Iceland elopement.

4. Decide on a location

To get your documents, choose a location. Remember, there are many national parks close by in Iceland! If you hire a photographer or videographer, they can suggest secluded spots for privacy.

5. Hire Photographer / Videographer

To make your special day even more memorable, consider including photographers and videographers in your budget. They capture precious moments that you might otherwise forget as time flies by. Plus, you can cherish and share these memories with others. Some photographers also help with wedding planning, which can be very helpful. Specializing in elopements and small weddings, they have the knowledge to make your journey smoother. With their guidance, you can easily bring your vision to life and ensure that everything aligns with your desires.

6. Get Florals

Don't Underestimate the Influence of Blooms - Even in an Intimate Elopement!
Deciding to elope should never equate to sacrificing the magical allure of a stunning flower arrangement on your big day. Flowers possess an extraordinary power to elevate the bridal aesthetic and simultaneously become treasured mementos that will forever evoke the memories of this extraordinary chapter in your lives, particularly if you opt for preservation.
I wholeheartedly advise embracing the indulgence of a beautifully crafted bouquet, a delicate boutonniere, and even a mesmerizing centerpiece, whether it adorns your dinner table or your intimate ceremony space. These floral accents will bring an element of enchantment and elegance, setting the stage for an unforgettable celebration of your love.

There are some incredibly talented florists in Iceland who can make your floral dreams come true! Such as; Reykjavik Flower, Husi Bloma, 4 Arstidir

7. Accommodations

Plan Ahead for your Iceland Elopement!

If you're dreaming of an enchanting elopement in Iceland, it's crucial to take proactive steps when it comes to your bookings. Securing your accommodations well in advance is essential, especially during the popular months of late June to early September when availability fills up rapidly.
For those seeking a romantic escape during the festive season of Christmas and New Year, I strongly advise you to book as soon as possible. With Iceland's captivating holiday atmosphere, demand is high, and availability can dwindle swiftly.

By planning ahead and securing your preferred accommodation well in advance, you'll ensure a stress-free and seamless experience. Not only will you have a cozy and comfortable place to stay, but you'll also have the freedom to fully immerse yourself in creating lifelong memories during your elopement.
So, don't delay! Mark your calendar and make those reservations early to guarantee a remarkable elopement experience in the captivating country of Iceland!
